Everything you need to know about using Browse Cars.

Selling a carListing, pricing, managing & marking sold
How much does it cost to list a car?

Nothing. Listing is free and stays live for as long as you want — there's no fixed term and no charge to keep it up. We may offer optional paid extras later (like promoting a listing), but listing itself will always be free.

What do I need to list a car?

Your number plate (we look up the make, model and year automatically), the current mileage, your asking price, your postcode, and at least three clear photos. You'll also need to say whether the car has any write-off history or outstanding finance. You can save a draft and come back to finish it later.

Can I change the price or photos after listing?

Yes. Go to Account → Selling, tap the car, then press Edit. You can update photos, the description, price — anything. If you lower the price, buyers will see the original price crossed out next to the new one.

How do I see how my listing is doing?

Go to Account → Selling and tap on the car. The Manage page shows views, saves, shares and new conversations for the last week. For a broader view across all your cars, check the Insights page.

How do I mark a car as sold?

From the car's Manage page (Account → Selling → tap the car). You can name the buyer, choosing from people who messaged you about it. They'll be asked to confirm the purchase, and then you can each leave a review — which helps build both of your track records on the site.

Can I list my car on other sites at the same time?

Yes, absolutely. Just remember to mark it as sold or remove it everywhere once it's gone, so buyers don't waste time on a car that's no longer available.

Can I copy a listing from another site?

On a computer, yes. Once you're signed in, use "Import from another listing" on the sell page — paste the URL and we'll pull across the details and photos so you don't have to retype everything. Check the result before publishing.

Buying a carSearching, messaging & making offers
How do I contact a seller?

Open the listing and press Message Seller. The conversation stays inside Browse Cars — your phone number and email are never shared with the other person.

Can I make an offer or arrange a viewing?

Yes, both from inside the chat. You can propose an offer amount, or suggest a date, time and place for a viewing. The seller can accept, decline, or suggest something different.

How do I search near me?

Open the filters on the search page, enter your postcode and choose a distance. You can also sort by nearest, filter by fuel type, transmission, body type, price range, mileage, and exclude written-off cars or cars with outstanding finance.

Can I save cars or hide ones I'm not interested in?

Yes. Tap the heart icon on any listing to save it — you'll find your saved cars in the Saved tab. To hide a car from your search results, use the eye icon on the listing tile.

How will I know when a seller replies?

You'll see the reply in your Messages tab. We also send an email notification for new messages. For instant alerts, turn on browser or phone notifications in Account → Settings → Notifications.

What should I check before paying for a car?

Always view the car in person first. Check the V5C logbook matches the seller's name and address, look up the free MOT history at gov.uk, consider a vehicle history check for finance and write-off records, and pay by bank transfer so you have a record. Never send money for a car you haven't seen.

Trust & safetyReviews, reports, blocking & payments
How do reviews work?

After the buyer confirms a sale, both people can leave a review: a rating out of five and an optional comment. Reviews stay hidden until both sides have reviewed, or 14 days after the sale is confirmed — whichever comes first. This stops one person's review from influencing the other's.

How do I report a listing or a person?

Use the Report link on any listing, on a person's profile, or on a review. Pick the reason that fits and add any details that help us understand the situation. We look at every report.

Can I block someone?

Yes. Open the conversation with them and use the block option in the menu. Once blocked, they can't message you or see your listings, and you won't see theirs. You can manage your blocked list in Account → Settings.

Does Browse Cars handle the payment?

No. Browse Cars connects buyers and sellers — payment is arranged directly between you, just like any private sale. We don't hold money, offer escrow, or guarantee payments. Never send a deposit or payment for a car you haven't seen in person, to someone you haven't met. Requests to pay by bank transfer to "hold" a car, or via gift cards or cryptocurrency, are common signs of a scam.

What do write-off categories mean?

When an insurer writes off a car, it's placed in a category based on the damage. Cat A (scrap only) and Cat B (break for parts) can never be driven again. Cat S (structural damage) and Cat N (non-structural) can be repaired and returned to the road, but the history follows the car permanently. On Browse Cars, write-off status is shown clearly on every listing.
